Samsung's expertise in foldable screens is unparalleled in the market today. The same can be said about standard OLED panels for laptops/notebooks. To better showcase its screen-making capabilities, Samsung has now launched a dedicated website detailing its foldable screens.
The company's flexible OLED displays are officially known as "Flex OLED" on the website (via). Clicking this option reveals a subcategory of displays, including Flex Bar, Flex Note, Flex Square, Rollable Flex, and Slidable Flex.
Starting with the Flex Bar, this display is for clamshell devices like the company's Galaxy Z Flip series. Meanwhile, Flex Note refers to foldable screens meant for foldable laptops, and Flex Square is what we're seeing on devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Rollable Flex and Slidable Flex screens are concepts in development right now. Rival manufacturer LG is using rollable displays in its Signature OLED TV R lineup.
All new Samsung Flex OLED displays support HDR10+ and higher brightness levels
Meanwhile, sliding screens topped the news this year after OPPO unveiled the OPPO X Concept a few months ago. However, it doesn't look like the phone will be launched anytime soon. Samsung Display's ambitions are clearly very high, and the new website makes it clear.
The company claims that its flexible OLEDs bring high brightness, low folding radius (R1.4), and HDR10+ support. Moreover, Samsung's Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) technology is said to offer better screen protection than competing offerings.
Samsung also claims that its foldable screens can withstand up to 200,000 folds. This amounts to 100 screen folds/unfolds every day for five years. In short, the company wants the world to know that its foldable or Flex OLED displays can stand the test of time.
The manufacturer also has a page dedicated to standard OLED panels. This section highlights the advantages of OLED over traditional LCD screens, including battery consumption and a reduction in harmful blue light.
While it may take a while until we see foldable or foldable phones on the market, Samsung has already shown what it can do with its clamshell and box-type foldable screens. Although the company recently launched the Galaxy Z Fold 3, we are already learning from its successor. One report suggests that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 may be cheaper than its predecessor. So we could be in 2022 very exciting.
