Vodafone signs new deals with CityFibre and Openreach

Vodafone says it has signed new deals with CityFibre and Openreach that it claims will make it the UK's largest full-fiber broadband provider.

The agreement with Vodafone supports CityFibre's pledge to reach 285 cities, towns and villages by 2025 in the UK.

Experts predict the move should be good for consumers, as other providers push to reach a similar scale.

Vodafone first partnered with CityFibre in 2017, in a deal believed to be worth around £500m.

Alternate Network is the largest outside the major telecom giants to lay fiber in the UK in recent years, with around 50 internet providers currently using its infrastructure.
'positive to consumers'

“A couple of years ago we were new to broadband, but by spring we will have the widest footprint of fiber to UK workplaces,” Ahmed Essam, chief executive of Vodafone UK, told the Financial Times.

Mr. Essam said that by not having its own fixed-line network, the company was free to expand its reach at a faster rate than would have been possible.

He said of his main competitors: "BT will always sell on BT. Virgin Media will always sell on Virgin Media."

Mark Jackson, editor at ISPreview, told the BBC the move was likely to have a positive impact on consumers.

Crucially, this change is not unique to Vodafone, as CityFibre looks to provide a similar level of national coverage to other ISPs.

“We fully expect the likes of TalkTalk, for example, to follow suit in the near future. For consumers, this simply means a greater degree of choice, which is often faster and less expensive than they had access to before. And that's a good thing.”
